Chartering a J/22 for the
RIWKC
Todd
Hiller, Charter Chairman
(If
you're interested in chartering, then you
are interested in housing)
Check
out the online
roster of USA J/22 owners to find one
near you.
They might be interested in chartering their
boat.
A
roster
of boats available for charter has been
developed and is being expanded daily.
J/22 owners in Annapolis, on the east coast,
and nationally are being contacted in order
to develop a roster of boats that will be available
for charter. This list of possible charter boats
is published here.
It includes specific information about each
boat including age, availability of measurement
certificate, whether foils are optimized, availability
of sails (age, brand), and address and any alternative
means of contact of the owner. We will provide
the owners with a pro forma chartering agreement
and availability of regatta insurance if desired.
The
actual charter arrangements will be negotiated
between the competitors and owners. The parties
can make their own arrangements including the
charter fee, logistics of getting it to the
regatta, length of charter, availability of
sails, etc. This gives the competitors better
control over the price they are willing to pay
for charters and the quality of the boat they
charter.
The
organizing committee anticipates having a small
pool of boats with the committee acting as the
chartering intermediary, but this pool will
be limited to international teams that may have
technical or language problems arranging a charter
directly.
It
has not yet been identified what would be a
"fair" charter fee. One common practice
in major J/22 regattas such as the World Championships
has been that the competitor buys a new suit
of sails for the regatta. The charterer uses
the sails in the regatta and then leaves them
with the chartered boat. The charter fee to
the owner is that one-regatta old suit of sails.
We are negotiating with local sailmakers to
have discounted packages for new sails coordinated
with chartering. Details will be announced as
they become available.
