AYC has been invited to take part in the US Yacht Club Challenge, sponsored by Newport Harbor Yacht Club of Newport Beach, California. from April 10 - 13, 1996 Ten yacht clubs from around the country are represented at this regatta by seven members teams sailing the one-design Catalina 37s of the Long Beach Sailing Foundation. Each yacht club also has three-member junior teams sailing Lasers and CFJs.

Results of First Day of Racing:
On the first day of competition three races were sailed under sunny skies with light winds of 6 - 10 knots. Courses were windward/leeward with the starting line in the middle of the course. The first race was one time around, while the second and third races were two times around. Ten protests are pending, with six in the Catalina 37 fleet. Racing is very close in the Catalina 37 fleet, with first through eighth places only separated by 8 points. The top four in the CFJs are within 5 1/4 pts., but Dalton Bergan of Seattle Yacht Club is dominating the Laser fleet with three firsts.
The regatta is being scored with the results of the Catalina 37 fleet counting for 60% of the final score, the Lasers results counting 20%, and the CFJs results adding the last 20%. If eight races are completed, one throw-out will be allowed.
